Desiree Rogers Stepping Down as White House Social Secretary...

via the Chicago Sun Times:
White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers told me Friday she will step down next month, after presiding over 330 events in the White House in 14 months.

Rogers is departing after achieving a major goal of President Obama and First Lady Michelle — opening up the White House to make it the “peoples house.” “As we turn the corner on the first year,” Rogers told me, “this is a good time for me to explore opportunities in the corporate world.”

Rogers told me it has been “an honor and a privilege to serve this president and First Lady, in what has certainly been a historic presidency.” Rogers, a friend of the First Couple for years, was one of the first Obama administration appointees.

“When I took on this assignment, we talked about the importance of creating the people’s house. My work was really to create this framework,” she told me. “I think I completed that work. Our office has been able to lay the foundation for what will be known as the ‘people’s house’ and it has already taken shape.”

Michelle O. Shines a Light on the Nation's Food Deserts...

via HuffPo: The White House blog just released a new video of Michelle Obama talking about the her goal of eliminating "food deserts" which are usually low-income urban areas that don't have access to fresh fruits, vegetables and healthy foods. These areas are often dominated by fast food restaurants and convenience stores, making it hard for children who live in these areas to get the nutritious food they need, as The First Lady points out. The video is part of Michelle's Let's Move! campaign, to fight childhood obesity and to eliminate food deserts within 7 years.

Designer Maria Pinto, A Michelle O. Fave to Shut Down Operations..

via HuffPo:
Designer Maria Pinto has announced that she will cease business operations and close her retail boutique in Chicago, according to the Chicago Sun-Times. Pinto, a Michelle Obama favorite, also dressed Oprah and other Chicago socialites, but her business has suffered due to ''increasing economic challenges and soft buying trends at the top end of the apparel market," she said.

''After 20 years of pursuing my greatest passion and striving to build a successful high-end fashion business, the time has come for a new chapter in my life.''

Pinto launched her namesake line in 1991, took a two-year break around 2000, relaunched in 2004 and opened her first shop in 2008. She was even tapped to design the first lady and Valerie Jarrett's Olympic delegation ensembles.

Via the AP:
Crediting civil rights-era protest songs and their spiritual predecessors for his election, President Barack Obama on Tuesday sat in the East Room of his White House and listened to an all-star lineup of performers pay tribute to the music that he said fueled freedom marches and civil disobedience.

"The civil rights movement was a movement sustained by music," Obama said as he welcomed his audience. He said activists from coast to coast were inspired by spirituals, felt their will sharpened by protest songs and base broadened by artists of hope. He said their work paved the way toward a more just America that allowed him to make history in 2008 with his election.

"Tonight, we celebrate the music of the movement," Obama said.

Via HuffPo:
On Tuesday Michelle Obama will announce a "very ambitious" program to end childhood obesity. She sat down with Robin Roberts for an interview that aired on Tuesday morning's Good Morning America.

"I love burgers and fries. And I love ice cream and cake," said the first lady. "And so do most kids. And we're not talking about a lifestyle that excludes all that. The question is how do we help people balance that out so that they're not facing life-threatening preventable illnesses so they're enjoying their food, they're eating their vegetables, they're doing their running and walking and playing but still have time to get a good fun meal in once in a while."

Michelle O. in Narciso Rodriguez: To Sleeve or Not to Sleeve?

First lady Michelle Obama attended the National Prayer Breakfast along with the President in Washington D.C., Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 (on the right). On the left, Michelle O. is seen wearing the same Narciso Rodriguez dress to the President's address to a joint session of Congress on February 24th, 2009. Sporting bear arms to the event in 2009 caused an uproar of near epic proportions that in my personal opinion was WAY over the top and super unnecessary. My vote is for the sleeveless version.
