Each of Anna's sartorial decisions are deliberate as she decides which trends to promote. And she could be pushing Vogue editor-at-large Andre Leon Talley's agenda, as last month he declared the high, high heel to be over. Talley called stilettos "towering torture chambers" and said designers need a "reality check." In fact, Talley might be favoring a new style icon, in particular:
Can't anyone take a cue from First Lady Michelle Obama, in the elegant low-heeled shoes she always wears? A flat would be nice. Talley confessed his confusion over why women choose to wear such painful shoes. He pointed to Diana Vreeland, Katharine Hepburn and C.Z. Guest as women who owned all of the grace in the world and lacked any precarious pairs of heels.
He ended with an appeal to today's couture cobblers: Can you stop the madness and dream up a new way to define your silhouette without a needle heel that defies not only gravity but elegance?

First Lady Michelle Obama's outreach to community health centers included a visit to the Caroline Family Practice in Bowling Green, Virginia on Monday, July 27, 2009. She participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to help open the new community health center, which was made possible through a $1.3 million award of Recovery Act funds. She also met with current and former members of the National Health Service Corps, a program that provides scholarships and loan repayments to clinicians who provide medical, dental, and mental health care in underserved communities. What First Lady Michelle Obama Did This Week + Her Plans For Next Week..
via Lynn Sweet:
First Lady Michelle Obama took this week off after a sprint through Russia, Italy and Ghana with her mom, the girls and the president. But there have been sightings, nonetheless. On Tuesday, my Politics Daily colleague Walter Shapiro tipped me that Mrs. Obama was lunching at Acadiana in downtown Washington.
On Wednesday, Fox News White House correspondent Major Garrett reported that NBA star Carlos Boozer had visited the White House and met Mrs. Obama and all of the senior staff.
And though it has been reported for months that the Obamas will vacation on Martha's Vineyard in August, the Boston Herald has a few more details. The first lady and the kids will arrive either Aug. 16 or 17, with the president following on Aug. 20. They will stay until Aug. 31.
Plan accordingly.
The East Wing pace picks up next week when Mrs. Obama has public events on Tuesday and Friday.
On Tuesday, the president and first lady will host country music stars and music students, a continuation of the White House music series that began in June by spotlighting jazz greats.
Brad Paisley, Alison Krauss and Union Station perform at the White House that evening. In keeping with Mrs. Obama's plan to pack more meaning into each White House event, those stars will lead workshops Tuesday afternoon for some 125 music students from across the country.
The concert -- billed as "The Country Music Celebration" -- is being presented with help from the Country Music Association and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. The Grand Ole Opry and Great American Country Television are co-producing.
On Friday, Mrs. Obama helps the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum celebrate the 10th annual National Design Awards with a lunch honoring the winners and finalists, as well as an educational program to highlight all kinds of design at museums in the city.

Happy Birthday Malia!
via HuffPo:
President Barack Obama is helping the nation celebrate its birthday and his daughter Malia celebrate hers.
The president is to fly Friday morning to Camp David, Md., for the first part of the first family's Fourth of July celebration, including daughter Malia's 11th birthday on Saturday.
About 20 of her tween-age friends will be on hand for the festivities. In an interview with The Associated Press, the president was bemused at the thought of being surrounded by so many girls. As he put it, "It's a little intimidating."
The first family returns to the White House by Friday evening to host 1,200 military families for a Fourth of July barbecue on the South Lawn of the White House.
