With her husband's approval ratings plumbing new lows, Michelle Obama could be the Democratic Party's most powerful asset in the upcoming midterm elections. Calling her an “untapped political weapon,” Politico says the popular First Lady will likely take a central role this fall, in a way she didn’t in 2008, when she gave an infamous quote about the campaign making her “proud to be an American for the first time." The First Lady hasn't lost her ability to rile the opposition (witness this weekend's Drudge headlines on her supposedly lavish vacation in Spain), but one thing is clear: Democratic politicians want FLOTUS.
Pundits claim Michelle hearkens back to the energy and excitement of Obama’s presidential campaign.
"Michelle is 'still a reminder of what people liked about President Obama,' added Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer. Unlike her husband, the first lady 'can retain some of the image and the excitement from the campaign because you're not pushing policy, you're not angering members of Congress.'"
Michele could help in tight races in Illinois, Nevada, and Florida. Some candidates — like Illinois representative Deborah Halvorson and Democratic Senate candidate Elaine Marshall of North Carolina — have publicly asked for Michelle to come campaign for them. And others, like Representative Joe Sestak, have said they’d rather have Michelle than her husband. “My No. 1 choice ... is Michelle Obama,” Sestak told reporters last week. “I told them it’s a woman’s nation. Women are more employed than men for the first time in our nation’s history.”

First Lady Michelle Obama Makes a Guest Appearance on Sesame Street...
The first lady traveled to New York to tape an episode of "Sesame Street" on May 5, 2009, saying the appearance was "probably the best thing I've done at the White House." Air date to be announced.
Earlier in the day, the first lady spoke at the UN while wearing the same Tracy Feith dress she wore to the National Prayer Service the day after the inauguration. Susan Rice introduced her, and called the first lady "wicked smart."

Michelle Obama continues to enjoy high favorability ratings, with a recent poll showing that 76 percent of Americans have a positive opinion of her. That’s up from 68 percent before POTUS was inaugurated.
Much of the surge has to with Republican women, 67 percent of whom have a favorable view of Michelle Obama. That’s up 21 percent since January.
So far, FLOTUS is outpacing Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton on the likeability scale. Bush and Clinton had ratings of 64 percent and 60 percent, respectively, at similar times in their husbands' presidencies.
The poll also found that people’s overall perceptions of Bush and Obama varied:
“Among the most often used words to describe Michelle Obama are Strong, Confident, Smart, Wife, and Wonderful, none of which were in the top-20 words used for Laura Bush eight years ago. By contrast, Mrs. Bush was often described as Ladylike, Quiet, Loyal, Dignified, and Pleasant, none of which make the list for Mrs. Obama. Notably, Michelle Obama is rarely described in ideological terms – only one person out of 765 interviewed describes her as Liberal.”

Michelle Obama's Approval Ratings are Sky High...

As Williams argued, the First Lady has "got this Stokely Carmichael-in-a-designer-dress thing going," which may make her "something of an albatross."
So much for that idea. The Washington Post's Lois Romano reports:
At first, they didn't like the way she was talking about her husband's dirty socks. Then, they said she always looked angry. Later, they questioned her patriotism when she commented that she only recently became proud of her country. They even made hay over her biceps when she dared show up sleeveless for her husband's address to Congress in January.
Now, two months into her husband's presidency, as Michelle Obama embarks on her maiden official overseas trip, the first lady is enjoying a second look from the American public -- particularly from those who were put off by her as a candidate's wife, but are warming to her as the president's wife.
A Washington Post-ABC News survey conducted over the past few days shows a dramatic turnaround: Her favorability ratings are at 76 percent, up 28 points since summer. The number of people who view her negatively has plummeted.
Now, I think Romano's assumptions about previous public attitudes are a stretch. She writes, matter of factly, that Americans didn't like the way Michelle Obama spoke, looked, or dressed. I've seen no evidence to support this. There are plenty of members of the political elite in D.C. who felt this way, but to say this is how "the American public" felt is dubious, at best.
That said, the larger point is certainly true -- most of the country likes what they see from the First Lady, and she's getting more popular as time goes on. In June, 48% had a favorable impression of Michelle Obama, while 29% had an unfavorable impression. Now, 76% feel good about the president's spouse, and only 16% don't.
It seems efforts to smear Michelle Obama (wearing Rodarte in the pic above) aren't connecting.
